MCA Workboat Code edition 3 came into force from the 13th December 2023 for all newly built workboats and pilot boats. Existing vessels that are certificated under the Brown Code, its equivalent MGN 280(M), Workboat Code Edition 2 or Amendment 1 shall meet the requirements of Workboat Code edition 3 by the vessel’s next renewal examination or three years after the date of entry into force of the Code, whichever is later.
CRC are working closely with our vessel certifying authority MECAL to analyse the fleet and put together a comprehensive plan to comply with the new code. A vessel cannot meet a combination of the new Code and those of earlier codes or standards. This will be an interesting time in the industry with vessels possibly being taken out of service in order to have work done that is needed to comply with the new code.

This Code provides additional information needed for the design, construction, engineering, electrical systems, hull systems, fire protection & provision of firefighting, lifesaving, navigation and radio equipment to ensure the safety and protection of the crew, personnel, passengers and other marine users, and to maintain environmental standards. It also offsets new requirements for manning and the qualifications needed for the crew.
Innovation is happening across the workboat industry and CRC fully support these changes and developments, we are already well underway with new changes to qualification and certification with our full time staff who are currently undertaking the relevant training courses to fulfil new requirements outlined in the new code.
MASTERS & CREW
“Does this affect me?”
One of the many new changes means that Masters will need to have a few new qualifications.
All vessel Masters are required to have “MCA approved Small Ships Navigation and Radar Course”. This course covers Electronic Chart systems and Bridge Watchkeeping (Ref MGN 691(M))
Masters will also need to complete the following approved MCA course:
- MCA Stability Training (1 Day)
- Medical First Aid if operating on an MLC compliant vessel
